Known from (the upper reaches of) various affluents of the Lualaba [Luhoho, Ulindi (Ref. 80298) and Lowa (Ref. 87863)] and Rusizi (Ref. 80298, 87863). Also reported from the Lufira drainage (upper Lualaba) (Ref. 2970) and Lukuga (Ref. 681), but this is not confirmed in later publications. Described from "Boulira, Kitembo" and "Kitembo" (Ref. 59198), and reported from "Nya Barongo (Kitembo)" (Ref. 83444), but it is unclear whether these localities are within the Lake Kivu or Congo River basin; presence in Lake Kivu unconfirmed in Ref. 3818 or 107916. According to Ref. 46152, the report of Barbus longifilis in Ref. 83444 from the Nya-Barongo River, Kivu region, refers to specimens originating from a river of the Congo basin in the Kivu region and not to Lake Kivu system or to the Nyabarongo from the Upper Akagera in Rwanda. The map in Ref. 80308 however shows the Nyabarongo as a Lake Kivu tributary, while the Nyawarongo drains to the west of the lake. Also Ref. 3818, 59198.
